When the Weather (not the hair) is Frightful

Blah… it’s winter.

While the season is perfect to get comfortable with a cup of hot cocoa, Netflix, & your cat, you can’t ignore the fact that the dry, dreary, plain yucky weather can wreak havoc on your hair. Don’t fret! There are plenty of ways you can protect your hair from the dreaded weather.

Your hair starts to become more difficult to retain moisture, making it dry, brittle, and prone to breakage and damage, not to mention the frizz and static that often comes (though doesn’t go) with your winter wardrobe. However, these are all problems that can be avoided as long as you have the right hair care routine for winter. Don’t let your hair fall victim to the winter blues too! When Snowflakes Fall… From Your Scalp

Your scalp is drier and itchier than ever during the winter months because of the lack of moisture in the air. This is why your poor skin in dry and it seems you have to bathe with lotion. It leads to issues like dandruff and scalp irritation, which can lead to hair loss in severe cases. What most people don’t realize is that the dandruff problem can be manageable with the right care and a little love.

Pureology Hydrate Shampoo & Conditioner (The Peppermint, Sage, & Rosemary create a cooling, invigorating feeling on your scalp relieving it of the itch and flakes.)

Redken Scalp Relief (This has powerful ingredients such as Zinc to relieve the agitation of the dryness and itch.)

Young Living Rosemary & Lavender Essential Oils (Mix with Coconut Oil as a mask or make a mist with distilled water & witch hazel for natural relief.) 2 Gifts Not Wanted for Christmas… Frizz & Static

One of the most annoying things about winter is all of the static and frizz. The hoodies, sweater, scarves, gloves, and beanies all seem to gang up on your hair, like your older aunts and grandmas wanting to smooch you at your holiday gatherings. To tackle this, wash your hair only with lukewarm water, NOT hot water, as the latter will strip away the natural oils and blow open the cuticle that protect and nourish your hair. Apply a leave-in conditioner or frizz fighting serum or lotion to keep your hair smooth.

Pureology Colour Fanatic Multi-Tasking Hair Beautifier (This provides 21 benefits including static reducing and frizz fighting.)

Redken Frizz Dismiss Regimen (My ultimate favorite for all hair types since it is customizable. It also includes “dryer” sheets for your hair to tame the frizz on the run.)

Young Living Sandalwood with Almond Oil as a serum is a natural and fantastic way to fight frizz. Shine Bright like a Diamond Pendent Your Husband Should Have Bought You (Instead of the Blender)

The lack of moisture in winter not only dries out your scalp and makes your hair frizzy, but also leaves your hair looking dull, lifeless, as a blah. Ask your stylists about conditioning shine treatments such as a Redken Shades EQ Gloss.

Pureology Shine Max (This serum adds light reflecting shine while making your hair soft and luxurious. This also tames stray fly aways without making you look like a grease pit.)

Redken Diamond Oil Pillow Proof Glow Dry (Honest to God, this is hair crack. Now only does it add insane shine without the weight of an oil, it protects against heat and blow dries your hair 50% faster.)

Honey with Young Living Roman Chamomile Essential Oil (Honey is a humectant that seals in the moisture and helps restore shine to dull and damaged hair. Roman Chamomile soothes scalp and adds softness to hair strands. Leave on for 30 minutes and rinse well.)Get Warm (With Cocoa, a Blankie, & Hair Mask)

Ensure your follicles get all the nourishment and love you can give them by warming them up a tad. Throw on your slippers, relax and moisturize your hair under a cap. Purchase a cheap shower cap at the dollar store and allow it to work wonders. Putting one on while deep conditioning will trap the heat, open the cuticle, and allow the conditioner to deeply penetrate the hair shaft.

Pureology Precious Oil Softening Hair Masque (This intensely moisturizes with Sunflower & Coconut Oil.)

Redken Diamond Oil Deep Facets Intensive Treatment Mask (This provides intensive nourishment and provides a protective layer of oils to help prevent damage.)

Warmed Olive Oil & Young Living Geranium (Smell fantastic while naturally giving your hair some much needed love.)Keep Your Hair Cool… Not Hot

Scorching hot water in the shower may feel great on a cold winter’s morning but you are causing more harm than good. Your skin and hair loses all it natural oils and your pores and hair cuticles remains open. Lock in moisture by rinsing with warm to cool, NOT hot. Fun tip: Apply a thin layer of coconut oil to your skin (and hair if your hair is thick and course) before rinsing. Your skin will remain silky and soft. Also, blow dry your hair on low or medium heat. Let’s take just 5 more minutes in the morning. It’s not that bad… and I promise you, you’ll thank me. Plus, it’s more time to hide from your kids and husbands. Towels and Hats and Friction… OH MY!

Rubbing your hair with a towel when you get out of the shower can cause some serious breakage. Your hair is at its weakest state when it is wet. Blot and squeeze the excess water out. Hats are another culprit for breakage. I get it, it’s freaking cold and we need hats-plain and simple. However, taking them on and off can cause friction, breakage, and horrible static. Try putting a silk bandana in the hat or wrapping a silk scarf around your head first before adorning your cute winter hat. Add Some Color to the Gray & Drab

Spice up your look with a new color. Don’t go drastic since lord knows you will change your mind come spring. However, a little makeover does wonders for our mood. While your at it, treat yourself to a mani/pedi…. and maybe a glass of champagne. Apply some Young Living Stress Away or Peace & Calming and just relax.

Happy Winter my little snowflakes! Be as unique as they are!

The Adventures of Marlena’s Hair Has Continued!

Listen, this girl has given me a challenge of a lifetime. It has taken, what it feels like a gazillion processes to achieve what I like to think of as a complete and utter miracle.

Marlena has called me her “Hair Angel Sent From Heaven”. I don’t know if I would go that far, but I was a bit of a miracle worker. (Pat on the back for me!)

If you are new to The Adventures of Marlena’s Hair, click below to read the whole story. It is a must to really feel the whole effect of this miraculous creation.

Read Me! Read Me!

After achieving what I thought was success, of course she couldn’t stop there. This is the glory and horror of our profession. We have a rainbow of colors and a plethora of shears on hand and dangerously creative minds that shoot out endless ideas like a machine gun.

Let us take a look at what we had achieved. Pretty darn amazing figuring we came from the blue from hell. I know pretty incredible!!!!!!

Marlena then decided to cut her hair and I mean cut. All that work and we wack it off. Though, her hair felt amazing even after the bazillion processes, a good haircut wasn’t a bad idea. To top it off, it is pretty cute.

But let’s add one more task to make my life harder. How about going blonder?

Whoa is me!

I knew that green was going to rear it’s ugly head again. Luckily, these are times I love my job. It’s exhilarating to have a challenge. Minor note: I love insane challenges only when the person I am servicing understands the process is unpredictable… as well as the cost. Anything is possible with time, patience, trust, and a full wallet.

After some major fading and a clarifying treatment, here is what I had to work with:

I started by weaving thin highlights of Lightener throughout her entire head root to end. Between the foils, I toned some of the sage green with a light red orange. I let her sit for about a half hour only to save the integrity of her hair.

After rinsing and blow drying, we were left with a too warm of root and mint green and yellow blonde ends. I wish I had a picture.

This is again when the fun part starts. Formulating. This is when I had to come up with one color for the root area and one for the ends and have them both blend and match.

For the root, I used a Level 7 Mocha. I love the Mochas in Redken Shades EQ Cream. They are a cool warm and just beautiful. For the ends, I used the same light red orange as before.

The root color turned out gorgeous. However, to my dismay, the ends did nothing but look like crud.

Time for the thinking cap and reassurance from another stylist. I remembered a formula for a Rose Gold I did on a client recently. What the hell? What could it hurt? With a more pigmented red, maybe the green would finally cancel out. I mixed a Level 5 red violet with a light titanium with clear and processed for 5-8 minutes all at the same time doing a lot of praying.

After checking to make sure most of the green was neutralized, I rinsed.

After blow drying even just one section, I was jumping for joy. SUCCESS!

Holy crap was it perfectly beautiful?Check it out!  Eeeeeeek! I am so excited! I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout! I mean come one, look what we did! A miracle I tell you!

Let us review: What will we do next! Stay tuned!!

Happy Changing Your Color and Praying at the Same Time!

The Adventures of Marlena’s Hair

Oooooooo, Color Corrections, I have a love/hate relationship with them.

This is Marlena before: Her brief hair history includes:

Her midshaft to ends were pre lightened to a platinum blonde. Over that she decided to do the following:

  • Joico Cobalt Blue- Once
  • Joico Mermaid Blue- Once
  • Paul Mitchell Pop XG Blue- Once

Miss Marlena, of course, wanted the blue/teal out and to achieve a look like this……Yay

Now, Marlena is a new addition to our team at Salon Boutique, so she knows the ins and outs of the process. Thank God! And that patience is a virtue. But, I am always determined to deliver.

My first step was Malibu Direct Dye Lifter with 20 volume devoloper and left on for 45 minutes. This was my hero during The Adventures of Megan’s Hair. I applied this mid shaft to ends. Here’s the results:

After shampooing and blowing drying…. Ugh. Blue! Why do you have to be the devil? Ladies, listen. Pinks and Purples are way easier to lift out. Blue, Teal, Green, and even red are the absolute worst. THE WORST!

It lifted slightly. Notice the green rearing it’s ugly head? I know it ate through at least the first layer of the blue/teal, but it wasn’t enough.

Next, I applied Redken Flash Lift Lightener and 30 volume developer. After 30 minutes, I shampooed. Trying to save the integrity of her hair, I did not want to leave this on past a half hour. And the lovely results:

Yuck. We made jokes about it looking like a swamp. It had to go.

After searching the Internet of other ways to lift fashion colors, I found a suggestion to use Redken Color Fusion Clear and 30 volume peroxide.

Oh, what the hell? Might as well use the new girl at the salon as a guinea pig, right? She’s a trooper.

I applied it and put her under dryer with a cap. I checked her after 15 minutes. It wasn’t looking like it was budging so we shampooed yet again. Here are those results:

However, now that I am writing this blog and manipulating these lovely photo collages, there is a noticeable difference after the Clear process. I wish more would have come out!!!!! However, this was the hand I was dealt. The other stylists kept asking me… “What’s you’re next step?” Literally, I had no idea. But if anyone could give her the look she wanted, I knew I could do it.

Don’t worry. At times, Color Corrections can sometimes make me feel completely stupid. Remember though, when in doubt go back to your roots and remember Basic Color Theory.

What cancels out Green? What is on the opposite end of the color wheel from Green?

RED.

I applied a Level 7 Copper Red and prayed. Sometimes, Color Corrections are a whole lot of praying to Jesus and hoping for the best.

It immediately started to grab. Thank the Lord! I watched it closely and when all green seemed to be cancelled out I shampooed.

This is when I decided that Miss Marlena’s hair needed a breather. It was a livable color (for now), and not to mention, my brain needed a break.

I styled her pretty and both her and I were satisfied with the results.

What a difference! Grant it, not exactly the look we were going for but I already knew the next game plan. But remember, patience is a virtue. (Repeat that mantra during Color Corrections. Trust me. You need it.)

After a few days we would take the next step. But, here is the journey so far:

5 days later……..

We came back for Round 2. After obvious shampoos, it looked, well, quite nasty. Thank god for high buns! Yucky!

My next steps were to blend the root to remove the harsh line using a Level 4 Mocha and pull through a Level 6 Warm Mocha mixed with a Level 6 Intense Copper. I also decided to lift some pieces a little more.

I also prayed for the best. Positive thinking, right?

Well, the Mocha was gorgeous. The lightened pieces however were literally mint green.

At the sink, I had a crazy idea. What if I put straight Pravana Vivids Orange in it? What’s the worse thing that can happen?

Shame on me for not having a few pictures to mark this progress, but the Vivid Orange was a little too vivid. On a good note, the green was pretty much gone besides a few strands.

To tone down the brightness, I used a Level 7 Neutral Warm mixed with a Level 7 Neutral Brown.

Much better.

See…We are so close! With time and patience we will achieve the look she wants. Though, I am going to give myself a little pat on the back. This was a pretty job well done. A total of 8 hours and 7 processes later, we have achieved not only normality, but a gorgeous look. And OMG, so stinking close!

Let us review. Stay tuned for what is to come next! I already know my next game plan! But for now, let’s give not only Marlena’s hair a break, but also you a bit of a breather from reading this blog.

Happy Color-Correcting! …. or not

Things Your Stylist Wants You to Know & Understand … Elaborated

This was one of my first blogs I wrote for this website. I am sharing the Original Posting to elaborate and further stress some aspects so that you, as a client, can better understand.1. We love when you bring in photos, BUT only when they are realistic. When looking at hair inspiration, keep in mind what is feasible. Does the model have the same hair type, meaning is it fine or thick? If you have finer hair, we cannot make you look like Kim Kardashian without having to actually add hair to your head. Color is a whole other animal. If you have continually dyed your hair dark, those light blonde ombres are not an easy task. Lightener has to eat through all those layers of color and may require several appointments. Keep realistic expectations when bringing in photos to your stylist. We are beauticians not magicians.

  • Elaboration: A good stylist will have a proper consultation and will be honest of what it will take to achieve your desired look or if it is even possible due to certain factors such as hair type, lifestyle, previous chemical services, and/or integrity of your hair. If we fully discuss the possible outcomes and you still decide to go through service, that decision was yours and yours only. Please do not punish the stylist if they didn’t create miracles.

2. There is no such thing as a “wash and wear” hairstyle. We can definitely achieve a low maintenance look, however, no maintenance is impossible. All hairstyles require some sort of product and finagling whether it be just combing or a little fluffing.

  • Elaboration: Again, one should know this already after a proper consultation and reminded during the finishing time.

3. Count how many products we use. So many people say, “I can’t do anything with my hair” and when we ask what kind of products you use and you say, “none”, that is why. You will never be able to recreate the same look nor feel if you aren’t using products. And take this for an example, how many black heels do you own? Not all black shoes go with the same outfit. This means you may need a few “wardrobes” of hair products for different looks.

  • Elaboration: Home care is of the upmost importance. You visit the doctor when you are sick. Do you only go to the appointment and not pick up the prescription? So not only are hair products important to style your hair correctly for the desired look, but it is the “medicine” for your hair. If you color your hair, use any heat, or if your head sees any sort of light of day, YOUR HAIR NEEDS MEDICINE IN THE FORM OF HAIR PRODUCTS. If you choose not to, we cannot be held accountable for the failing integrity of your hair, fading of color, or any other unwanted hair problems.

4. Do not change your color drastically too frequent. You hair is not a cat. It does not have 9 lives.

  • Elaboration: If you choose to do this, note that there are several factors that should be considered. With a proper consultation, you will be made well aware of the process this will take, the possible outcomes, and the take-home hair care that will be required. (Please refer to my previous blog Bleach… The Good… The Bad… And Oh-So Pretty. Do not past go nor collect $100 dollars without reading that. Listen, we are professionals and we use our best judgement on what is not only feasible but what is SAFE for your hair.

5. For color appointments please come with clean, dry hair. Color is more easily absorbed when it doesn’t have gunk and buildup to get through. And if we have to blow dry you before your color, we will charge you more for the added time and effort on our part.

6. If we tell you “no” or that will fry your hair, listen to us. You are our walking advertisements, we obviously do not want you advertising frazzled hair. Trust us, we are only looking out for the integrity of your hair. However, if you must proceed, please budget for a deep conditioner. You will need it.

  • Elaboration: Please do not act surprised or be upset if a process takes a little longer than expected. We cannot predict the future. Do not blame us for unwanted outcomes if you were not fully honest with us. A stylist/ client relationship is just like any other relationship. It is built on trust and communication. Think of how upset you get at your significant other for “not listening”. Now what if they blamed you for them not listening? That would be pretty crappy. You put trust into your stylist just as I trust in my clients to listen to my opinions and suggestions. We trust one another based on communication. Now some of the stuff your stylist may tell you might not exactly be what you want to hear just like our significant others don’t want to hear half the things we say, however, we are professionals and what we say really does matter.

7. Do not blame us for giving you what you wanted. If you asked to go platinum blonde then realized you look much better as a brunette, we have to charge you. If you hate your new bangs, please don’t hate us. We only want to make you happy and beautiful. We live to please.

  • Elaboration: The bang thing is a killer. If you want them and get them and hate them, not our fault. Period. Enough said.

8. Split ends cannot be mended. Hair products cannot fuse hair together. There are products that will calm and smooth the fuzz, but the only thing that will get rid of split ends is a trim.

  • Elaboration: Get a trim more than once a year people. If you wonder why your hair does not grow, it’s because it’s breaking off. Your hair grows from the root in the scalp and unless you have alopecia (balding), your hair grows. If it’s crispy at ends, it’ll snap like a toothpick. Even if it is a dusting of the ends, do it. I hate hair cuts too but also hate the Gyno. I still have to go.

9. Salon products are better than Walmart’s and even though they may seem more costly, buy them. Why? Chemists. High end brands pay high-end bucks to chemists to create our luxurious products. Pantene, Pert, and Prauve are just cheap knockoffs with cheap ingredients.

  • Elaboration: Please refer to my previous blogs: #1 Hair Rule to fully understand why drugstore products are bad, bad, BAD! & What is Diversion? to find out why buying even professional name brand products from drugstores is the worst of the worst of hair sins.

10. Bleach is not as scary as you think. Many clients are terrified of bleach due to its so-called damaging effects. Bleach is only damaging when overlapped. Be honest with your hairstylist if you have had highlights or lightener in the past, even if you are brunette now. If your is long and you had highlights even two years ago, the lightener still lives on your ends.

  • Elaboration: I should have stated that there are several factors that compromise the integrity of your hair when using bleach and may result in some not-so-awesome results. Heat damage, box color, medication, previous chemical services even years ago may affect the outcome. Again, please be honest. Believe me, we will know and soon you will be reminded of the dishonestly. I want to give you an example: A client tells her stylist that she has no color in her hair. The stylist performs a highlight service. Once pulling out the client’s foils, she notices 2 inches of blonde then to her surprise 4 inches of red. Hmmmmmmm, obviously the last 4 inches had to of been previously colored and colored dark or red. And if that hair is gummy, then guarenteed boxed “devil” color was used. Now who are you going to be mad at? This circumstance also happens when purposely lifting dark previously colored hair. This is when toning comes into play. Blonde will not be achievable. But a pretty color will be atleast until the next visit. Be patient (and kind) my friend. We can only do so much without a magic wand.

11. We hate no-shows. If you need to reschedule an appointment or just cannot come in, please call us. We are not going to yell at you and this gives us the opportunity to fill your spot. Many of us work on commission. Without a booty in our chair we have no paycheck.

  • Elaboration: Please don’t stand us up. You are our hot date for the time of the visit. We love you, we want to spend time with you, we want to serve you, we get sad if we don’t get to. And if you are going to be late, give us a heads up and be courteous of our other guests with scheduled appointments.

12. We would rather fix our mistake than you go elsewhere. You are not going to offend us if you are unhappy with something. Again, we live to please. We want you to be happy. It is devastating to us emotionally and financially when you go around talking about how unhappy you are with us and our work. Please let us know. We can only grow from our mistakes and if we don’t know, we can’t fix it.

  • Elaboration: We will refund your money when we see fit or if we just don’t want to argue. Sometimes it is easier to let go of a situation then it is to stew over it. Our time is money. Time spent arguing over miscommunication or mis-listening is time we can be spending either fixing you or serving other guests. No disrespect. But if we can’t make you happy after all our attempts maybe the relationship is just not meant to be.

13. Do realize we paid a lot of money for our education and we ARE educated professionals. I promise you, we kind of know what we are talking about. We will have a proper consultation with you and we understand that you are some smart cookies but we are the ones who have been trained.

  • Elaboration: I know you are fervently searching hair on Google, Pinterest, Instagram, etc. I know you have been getting your hair professionally done for umpteen years. And I know you have probably experimented on your own. And I know your mother’s friend’s sister’s cousin in-law has done hair for 40 years. And I do not doubt that you have probably picked up a few snippets of information. But please, please, PLEASE don’t think you know more than than your stylist, at least not in our own profession. We take pride in our acquired education, and further, our continuing education. Please trust the fact that we know what is best for you. We know it. We studied it. We live it, learn it, love it, eat, drink, and breathe it.

14. If we are running behind, please be patient with us. You wouldn’t want us rushing on you to get to our next client. We try our best to give all our guests the same love and attention. If you just stay calm and be patient, we are guaranteed to give you the best customer service.

15. Added because 14 is an odd number to end on and because it’s an important subject to touch on:

  • Stylist’s prices differentiate from each other based on different factors such as demand of time, education, talent, time in profession, serviced demographic. Most of those are in direct correlation of each other. A high-priced stylist is normally most sought after, continues her education regularly, has put time in her art, and excels not only in technical skills but in people and business skills. A purse may be a purse and a car may be a car. But when you carry or drive high end, do you not notice the difference?
  • Now I am not saying you aren’t getting proper care from a lower priced stylist. You bet your butt you will, because they want to be high end. They want to be a star. All I am doing is explaining why some stylists may seem so-called “expensive”.

I want to take this time to thank you, my readers, in taking the time to one, read this blog, and two, educating yourselves in all things hair, makeup, essential oils, and life. I am honored to be apart of your adventure and only hope to make a small impact on your lives. And thank you to my clients, you trust me and believe in me. Without you, I would not be able to make giant leaps in my life nor make little footprints in other people’s sand. I only wish to continue my journey in educating and serving those I touch by writing this blog or what I do in the salon. I will continue to live, learn, and earn more because of the love I have for the beauty industry and because of you.

With Love,  Amanda Bossi

Oil Love (Chapter 2)

I’ve been experimenting more and more with essential oils and obviously have fallen more and more in love with them. And guess what? So has my husband.

I thought I would share the essential oils I have in their own special cabinet and what I personally use them for.

Here is what I have been playing around with:

1. Vetiver

  • I apply it to my husband’s bottom of foot, below the toes, to stop snoring.

2. RC

  • When my husband is extra stuffy, we apply it to his chest to help even more with his breathing

3. Lavender and Roman Chamomile diluted with Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • I use this magic blend to help calm and hopefully cure what I think is Mange on my poor feline baby.
  • I apply it on the affected areas once a day and comb her to massage it in.
  • It kills infection and suffocates any bugs that may be living in the skin.
  • It’s also very calming and seems to help her itch less.

4. Clary Sage

  • When rubbed on my husband’s small of back and my lower back and abdomen as well, it helps balance both of our hormones.
  • We add Idaho Blue Spruce to my husband’s customized blend to help boost his testosterone level.

5. Stress Away

  • This is my husband’s new-found favorite!
  • He applies it to his temples and wrists before bed to relax and wind down from the day’s work load.
  • I love diffusing this right next to my bedside. I sleep like a baby.

6. Sensation

  • I use it in my diffusing necklace practically everyday. It’s uplifting and smells so perfume-like.
  •  Makes me happy and I can relish in the present moment.

7. PanAway

  • I massage this oil with a little of Fractionated Coconut Oil up and down my sciatic nerve when my right leg feels numb at night.
  • When rubbed on temples, it helps when I am having a mild tension headache.

8. Citrus Fresh

  • I apply it to heart and wrists when I feel sad or blue.
  • A drop in a bottle of water actually makes me want to drink the water. It tastes delicious.

9. Sara

  • I bought this especially for my mother, but I now have found a love for this when dealing with the unavoidable family drama. When it is stressful or, what I like to call it , WWIII, we apply this over our specific energy centers or temples.

10. Tea Tree and Frankincense with Coconut Oil

  • I apply this directly to a blemish at night, and viola, it is practically gone in morning.

11. Peppermint and Lavender with Fractionated Coconut Oil

  • Occasionally I have a reaction to UV light and the rash is red and itchy. I apply this mixture over the affected areas to calm the skin and relieve the itching.

12. Purification

  • One of my absolute favorites!
  • I put a drop in my dishwasher when it starts to smell.
  • To scrub my carpets, I mix 3 drops Purification, 2 Tbsp Baking Soda, and water. My carpets never looked so clean nor smelled so fresh.
  • It also keeps bugs away. It will kill any bugs in my carpets from my poor sick kitty.
  • It repels pesky mosquitoes when applied to skin.
  • When diffused, it rids my house of cooking or cat smells or just plain old stale air.

13. Thieves

  • Now, THIS is my all time favorite!
  • Thieves Cleaner is the most fantastic product I have ever encountered. It smells incredible and is chemical free. I use it to clean everything!
  • I used one drop in water to clean fresh picked berries. When they are used in a pie, you can taste the cinnamon and clove. Though my pies are never pretty, it tasted amazing!
  • A drop of Thieves in tea or coffee is not only delicious but helps make one feel better. It almost warms your insides.

All of the above are tried and true for me. There are a few experiments that haven’t worked out so well for me however. Remember, everyone reacts differently to certain essential oils. You will find what works for you.

1. Peppermint- I have found that I cannot diffuse this. I will literally eat everything but the kitchen sink. I don’t know if it’s the sweet smell of it, but it makes me incredibly hungry.

Though, when mixed in Aloe Vera gel, it is very cooling to sun burned skin.

2. Sclar Essence and DiGize- These, for me, can only be taken in a gel capsule. The smells of these two oils are not very pleasing… at all.

3. AnimalScents Infect Away- My cat and I hate the way it smells. Not only that, I found we had better success with my own Roman Chamomile and Lavender blend.

My next order, I am super excited to try out The Culinary Collection and Live Your Passion.

Please stay tuned for my next chapter in my Oil Love Journey.

Happy Oiling!

    Oil Love (Chapter 1)

I know in this blog I normally talk only of hair and makeup. But, my new-found love of essential oils is worth sharing.

We have all heard about essential oils, especially with companies like Young Living (my personal favorite) becoming more and more of a household name.

Now, if you usually are a skeptic like me, you have probably already stopped reading and now went on to YouTubing cat videos. But if I still have you, I am telling you this IS a must-read.

Why did I turn to Essential Oils?

I needed to find something to stop my husband from snoring or I would have to resort to smothering him with a pillow. And he was about to receive a CPAP machine, and soon I would be sleeping next to Bane. See the problem?

I was desperate. Thankfully a cousin of mine has been using Essential Oils for some time now and held a hands-on party. I sat there and listened to an overwhelming amount of information and smelled enough Essential Oils that I think I left there feeling relaxed yet energized. There are over 100 Essential Oils (at least) and numerous Blends. I think, honestly, that is what sold me. There was so much more to know, to try, and to have. It was beyond fascinating.  I listened to success stories from her and other family members and friends. Yup, I was sold!

    How did I start?

My suggestion to you would be… Start Small. Start off choosing one ailment to reconcile first and go from there.

Mine was my husband’s snoring. It was an ailment for the both of us.

We first used 1 drop of Vetiver massaged onto his big toe. Sound ridiculous, right? Well, I will tell you that his breathing was much better. There were still a few deeper breathing sounds, not necessarily snoring but more like he was still struggling. The second night, we added RC Blend mixed with Fractionated Coconut Oil and massaged that onto his chest and switch the Vetiver from the big toe to the pad right underneath of his toes. Guess what? It was a miracle! No snoring, no heavy breathing, and he didn’t wake up in the middle of the night. After a few nights of doing this, he even told me that he too was a believer. He’s the biggest skeptic in the world, so that definitely says something.

But what else could I fix?

I have a 3 cats, one who has been struggling with skin issues for the past 2+ years. I had tried everything including countless drugs, supplements, and changing to hypoallergenic everything (including solely cleaning my house with stinky vinegar). I had opinions for 5 vets and had treated her for allergies of almost all kinds. She received countless steroid shots, antibiotics, and even an immuno-suppressant. Not only was I 2 grand deep in vet bills, but she was forced to live in an e-collar for the majority of this time.

At the time that my fur baby was on the harsh immuno-suppressant, I was also told to treat her for Mange. After treating her once a week for 3 weeks and noticing even more hair loss and scabbing, I did more research. When a cat has a weakened immune system, Mites and Mange will wreck havoc. So let me get this straight… I am suppressing her immune system AND expecting her to be cured of Mange? Something wasn’t right there.

She was miserable. I was miserable. My husband was miserable because I was miserable. It was not a happy home.

I stopped the immuno-suppressant immediately and the harsh chemical bug killer, and resorted to Essential Oils.

Now, cats are extremely sensitive to Essential Oils and a lot of them are toxic to them. I did extensive research and finally found a DIY Blend that I thought would be safe and hopefully effective.

I mixed 1 drop Lavendar and 1 drop Roman Chamomile with about 25-30 drops of Fractionated Coconut Oil to heavily dilute the blend for safety purposes. I rubbed this on all affected areas once a day. After about a week, her itching subsided, her skin started to return to a healthy pinkish-white, and the scabs started to heal. She became less lethargic and came out to see us more. Needless to say, my hope is restored in her recovery.

Though she is not fully healed nor cured yet, I am for sure continuing this treatment. And it doesn’t hurt that she smells fantastic.

I have also switched cleaning with vinegar to cleaning with Young Living Thieves Cleaner. This too is an all natural cleaning alternative and… OMG! It smells amazing! The smell of Clove, Cinnamon, Lemon, Eucalyptus, and Rosemary is way better than sour, bitter, and down right stinky vinegar cleaner.

Hair Care When Piggy is Strapped

Contrary to popular belief, you can have fabulous locks even when your poor piggy bank is strapped. However, there are always stipulations and of course, reality.

    Let’s talk haircuts.

First and foremost, if you keep your hair healthy, the less haircuts you will need. Keep heat to a minimum. Let me tell you this, no one needs to put 450 degrees on their poor hair strands. Whether you have 5 hairs on your head or a mane as thick as a lion, stop it right now. Turn that flat iron down to 350-375 degrees and take smaller sections to heat thoroughly and safely. Sure, it may take you a whopping 10 minutes longer, but your hair won’t be so mad at you. Also, quit the addiction to your hot tools. Listen, it’s okay to let you natural locks free, especially in the summer. But if you must, always use protection. In addition to turning down the heat, use a heat protectant prior to coming at it with a raging hot iron. Redken’s Iron Shape is an incredible option and does not leave a product feel in the hair. A little will go a long way making your hair and wallet very happy.

If you are one to always have your hair in a pony or headband, make sure they are not super tight. They will cut your hair only causing even more damage, splitting the hair where the bands are. Which then, in turn, will only make you think you need to flat iron those fly-always even more, upping the horrific devastation. The war will never be won that way.

Healthy Hair = Less Haircuts = Happy Piggy

Now, choosing a hair cut style that is congruent with your budget is also important. That trendy undercut or asymmetrical bob will need shaping more often. If you are working with a strapped piggy bank, a smart decision may be to choose a lower maintenance style.

This goes for hair color as well.

If you have black hair naturally and want to color your hair platinum or you have tons of grey and color your hair dark, obviously your stylist will need to see you much more often, a maximum of every 4 weeks. If you are working on a budget, it would be smart to talk to your stylist on a more wallet-friendly hair color.
Luckily, trends such as ombré and balayage allow you to push appointments farther since these trends already give the illusion of regrowth or “roots”. Or if you are one to receive all-over-color or root-touch-ups as well as highlights in the same visit, think of alternating these services at your appointments. For instance, Visit 1, you receive both services, and at Visit 2, you solely touch-up the regrowth with color. This way you are saving pennies at every other appointment.

Intelligent Choice of Color = Fuller Piggy

It is also paramount to do everything you can to conserve your color between each appointment. If you are not caring for your hair, you can kiss your color and your money goodbye. One will spend tons of money on a professional hair color and then use a cheap drugstore shampoo only stripping it out of their hair. Is this really saving money? Using professional-grade, salon-quality products and keeping heat use to a minimum, you will further safeguard your color.

    It starts in the shower.

Let me reiterate, buying cheap drug store products, especially box color, will NOT save you money. $6 box hair color turn screw up will cost you hundreds of dollars in corrective color at the salon, and those Pantenes and Suaves will cost you more in the amount of color appointments needed.

I will refer you now to a few past blogs I have written regarding these No-Nos before I go into a tangent.

But to sum up quickly, why drugstore products are bad, bad, bad…

They are filled with sulfates (salts), parabens (preservatives), silicones, and to top it off, primarily water. If this sounds bad, it’s because it is. Please read those past blogs.

Drugstore Products = BAD NEWS = Sad Hair and an even Sadder Piggy

Sure, professional-grade, salon-quality products may cost you more initially, but they will last you longer, save the integrity of your hair, and lengthen the lifespan of your color. Pureology, for example, prides themselves on being 100% vegan, containing zero-sulfates, anti-fade complexes, and very little water, lasting 60 shampoos. Now that sounds incredible, right?

Professional Products = Happy Hair = Pleased Piggy

I can hear you saying… But I still can’t afford it!

Okay, let’s think on this. Your hair is the accessory you never take off, your forever crown, and not to mention what people see when they, in fact, look at your face. I understand we all have our vices, some it may be shoes or handbags that we throw on the disgusting bathroom floor. There is no judgement here, but think about it. Maybe it’s okay to spend a little bit more to one, have your hair done correctly, and two, that suits you and your bank account best.

It is always important to keep in check with reality. Make sure you have realistic expectations with your hair that match your financials. And for heaven’s sake, care for your hair like you would a newborn child.
