I’m a Girl Boss, Baby

Holy crap! I opened my own salon. Yup, I am now a girl boss, a female entrepreneur, in charge of her own destiny.

Scary, yet thrilling shit.

Most people plan businesses for years. Nope, not me. Left my last job, sulked and panicked for about a month, signed a lease, and a month and half later the doors of the salon opened.

Crazy. I think so.

Boy, have I learned a lot. I’ve learned the difference between a sole proprietorship and a LLC, that there is a thing called Business Privledge Tax, that it helps to know people, and shit ain’t cheap. I thank god everyday for Google. There were a ton of sleepless nights and busy fingers searching the wide interweb for literally every bit of information I would need- tax write-offs, salon furniture, Pinterest binging.

Even wine wouldn’t calm me.

Honestly though, through the chaos what I learned the most is one, I am one tough cookie, and two, I have the best god damn support system a girl could ask for.

Without risk, there is no success. Why? Because you didn’t try. I sometimes sit in my salon at the end of the night at like 10 pm (probably with a glass of wine) and I look around and think- I really did this. And I did this in a month and a half. If I could high five myself I would. (But I have really big windows and somebody would think I was crazy.)

But no seriously, I did this. If I did it, so can you. Us women, sure we are crazy- Crazy awesome. Crazy strong, crazy stubborn, determined, independent, but we are some bad ass bitches.

It took something horrible to happen to me to light a fire under my toosh. But now, I am so thankful. It was a blessing in disguise. I see that now.

I am a girl boss. (For crying out loud, my last name is Bossi.)

I’m still scared but I am okay with that. If I wasn’t I wouldn’t push myself. I wouldn’t fight for this every single day.

It is important for me to succeed not just for me or my family but for every other future girl boss out there. For real though, if I can open a salon in a month an a half with very little money and almost zero cash flow, you can learn to fly a plane or knit or open up your own stinkin’ business.

Celebrate your past, your mistakes, and your shortcomings. Rejoice in your success. The value is in what you learn along the way. And honey, you will learn you too are a bad ass girl boss!

Happy Bossin’ like a Girl!

Make Today Your……

Bring it on, Baby!

Every day is a new day and how we start it is the most important. We all have heard the sayings:

Well, she woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning!

Or….

Who pi$$ed in her Wheaties this morning?

Let’s not be those people, people!

Now, grant it, we will have our bad days. We aren’t perfect. We are only mere humans.

In this blog, I will share my daily routine (though it is not perfect) that encourages it to be as good as it can be through the use of hair & makeup products and essential oils. I am always happy to receive readers comments! So tell me your unique ways to make your day great!

Yea, needless to say, I am not a pleasant person before my coffee. Please, do not talk to me for atleast 20 minutes and allow me to ready myself for the day’s adventures. Recently, I have found some morning boost with Young Living’s En-R-Gee Blend. The smell alone will put a little pep in your step. It’s strong. I’ll diffuse it in the bathroom while I get my act together or I have added it in my unscented lotion on days that I may need everything short of super powers.

If you would see me in the morning, I look like a cross between a Q-tip and a cockatoo. It’s a bit ridiculous. So even on days that I pull out the Lazy Card, I still manage to pull my hair up in a messy bun… Or Top Knot when I want to sound fancy. Don’t over think the bun ladies! I know you do. Let me bring you in on a little tip:

Lay on your bed and let you head hang off. Slowing glide your head onto the bed. This automatically smooths the underneath and brings your hair to the top of your head. Wrap it in your ponytail. Spread out the hair with your fingers to give the bun the fullness and look you want.

Look at that…. Easy!

On my extra special lazy days, I reach for a hat. Luckily for us, hats are hugely in style. Grab yourself an adorable fedora and no one will ever know your hair hasn’t been washed in 3 days. If it wasn’t for bronzer, brow pencil, mascara and most importantly, lipstick, my day could not start proper. Now, if you are anything like me, you are a lipstick hoarder… I mean, collector. My job requires me to wear black and black with splashes of black. Lipstick is my color! I switch which color I use daily to spice things up and brighten my mood. When I am feeling powerful, I break out that red lipstick! Nothing says GET IT like cherry red lips. When I am down in the dumps, I apply hot pink. When I’m feeling sassy, dark lips is the way to go. Play with lipstick, ladies! I mean, c’mon, there’s a bazillion colors out there waiting to be “collected”.After fixing my face and hair, I venture to my essential oil cabinet. Depending on how I want to conquer the day determines which oils I choose to use. However, I do add 1-2 drops of Cedarwood to my unscented lotion everyday. I have even added it to my hair cream, too. It is amazing for your skin and hair. It also opens your mind and relieves anxiety. Win win!

If I am feeling extra motivated to conquer my work day in both the creative and business aspects, Live Your Passion blend is my must have. I will wear it as a perfume.

If I know I am going to have to muscle up some extra brain power, Clarity Blend is my go to. I have even added Peppermint to up the ante. Clarity is also great when it’s paired with En-R-Gee. These bad boys go right into my diffuser necklace. These scents are pretty strong and I am always awakened when they get wafted up towards my nose. It’s important to take care of yourself through the day as well. Take your vitamins, eat somewhat well, and drink your water. If it wasn’t for Young Living’s Citrus Fresh Blend, I would never drink a drop. Citrus Fresh also supports one’s immune system and helps cleanse and open your lymphatic system.

I also keep following oils close at bay:

  • Lavender- All hail to Lavender. Yup! It does everything. It is connected at the hip with me.
  • Stress Away Blend- When a bump occurs in my good days’s road, this blend is my savior.
  • M-Grain Blend- I use this on my brows, temples, and base of head when I feel a stress or tension headache coming on. Migraines will ruin my day, so if I feel one coming one, I immediately grab this. When caught early enough, my migraine never rears it’s ugly head.

Please read through a lot of my past blogs to get more information on my favorite beauty products and tips, tricks, and advice on your hair & makeup and essential oil uses.
End your day on a good note! Slip on those mismatching pjs, wipe away the day’s grime, and pour yourself some wine… Or tea or whatever it may be to soothe and relax you.

Figure out what allows you to decompress after the day’s adventures. Whether it be yoga, reading, crappy TV drama, or cuddling with your cats, do it! It’s important to decompress or believe me, you will be up all night thinking endlessly of what happened, what could have happened, what will happen…. STOP! After my pjs are on and before my butt hits the couch, I do my nightly routine. I’m setting myself up for my next great day!

I remove my makeup and apply a night oil of Fractionated Coconut Oil and Frankincense. It keeps my face smooth and has amazing anti-aging capabilities. I then apply my lotion mixed with a drop of Cedarwood. Cedarwood also has been known to help with insomnia. Valerian Oil also aids in sleep. I massage this on my brain stem and behind ears. Young Living’s Release Blend over the liver allows you to rid yourself of negativity energy. Negativity energy is stored in your liver, resulting in not-so-good health and emotional stability. I like using this at night, because at the end of the day, it is just nice to let go.

In my diffuser, my new favorite concoction is a perfect blend of Cedarwood, Valerian, & Bergamot. All my cares drift away and sleep is warmly welcomed.

On days that may have been extra hard, I will take a hot shower to relax my muscles, follow my oil routine, and in my diffuser I put SARA blend and spray Lavender on my bedding. The smell is intoxicating and my stress melts away.

What’s your favorite diffuser recipe?

Sleep is so essential to your next day being amazing. You need sleep to wake up, kick ass, & conquer the next day!

Again, somedays we may fall. Somedays we may not look or feel our best. But if we can find a little bit of motivation whether it be in the form of a beauty routine or product, by a drop of an oil, or even a chant of inspiration.

Happy Making Your Day Whatever You Want It To Be!

The Art of the Eyebrow

So I have had tons of requests to write a column on achieving the perfect brow. First things first, let’s talk about what’s trending with the brow.

1. Thick Brows

Natural looking brows is the way to go. No one wants pencil this eyebrows anymore. So, put the tweezers down ladies. Over plucking is now not attractive and can cause serious problems. Going overboard on the tweezing may eventually lead to problems with the hair growth. But this leads me to another point: We don’t want wholly mammoths on our face either. So how do we know when we’ve crossed the line? Here is a diagram to help you figure out where the natural brow should be:

How-To-Use-An-Eyebrow-Brush-And-Use-Eyebrow-Shaping-1

The brow should start no further in than the inner corner of your eye. Go to far towards the nose and you are bordering uni-brow. The arch should start in the middle of eye and from a slight angle from the corner of nose. And the eyebrow should stop at a 45 degree angle from the outer corner of your eye and it needs to stay in line with the start of the brow.

The proper shaping will create the best look. Teeter from this and you may be walking around with an unwanted look of emotion.

2. Coloring In Your Brows

This does not mean draw them on. Less is more ladies. Find the color and the type of  product that will work best for you. You can use a pencil, shadow, or cream. Do you have unruly brows? A cream may work best for you to keep them tamed. Are your eyebrows light? A shadow will create a more natural, softer look? Pencils works for all eyebrow types; however, use sparingly and lighting brush the pencil over the brow so no harsh lines are created.

Find the perfect shade can be a daunting task. My suggestion would be start of slightly lighter than what you think your eyebrow color is. Any shading to them will automatically make them appear darker.

As I always say, “Practice makes perfect!” Will you get them perfect the first go-around? Maybe not. That is the beauty of makeup. It comes off. If at first you don’t succeed, try try again.

brows

1. Start with a clean brow. Use a brush to tame the unruly hairs.

2. Prime the eyebrow with your foundation.

3. Use your pencil, cream, or shadow to draw your guideline, following your natural shape.

4. Lightly create your top line and softly blend and color in the brow.

5. Use an opaque concealer to define a crisp outline below the brow.

6. Use a concealer or your foundation to outline the top.

7. Blend the lines out on both top and bottom.

8. Finish by dusting a setting power over top to set the brows so you don’t lose them by the end of the day.

Our eyebrows are what creates our emotions. They can strengthen your look. Keep them natural and all will be right in the world.

Find a good stylist or brow artist to create the initial look for you. You can keep up with them on your own. But again, beware of overdoing it. Regularly see your stylist for proper upkeep with the shape.

Happy Browing!

Bring In Fall With A Kiss… And Dark Lips

I love, love, LOVE lipstick. I never leave home without it. Fall is one of my favorite seasons for lipstick since I can break out those dark, sultry tones. Nothing says “HELLO!” like sexy, can’t-wait-to-be-kissed lips. So hello fall. My lips (and his) thank you.

You CAN wear dark lipstick. No matter what skin tone or hair color you have, anyone can pull it off. Of course there are a few key points to keep in mind.

IMG_5397.JPG

1. Remember, if you are going to do a bold lip, keep eyes soft and minimal. My favorite look is a simple gold shimmer shadow with only mascara and a deep burgundy lip. You will look like you walked straight off the runway.

2. Know your skin tone and underlying pigment. (Please refer to my blog Undertones… De-Mystified)

3. When it comes to those burgundy shades, there are 4 tonal differences to keep in mind: pink, brown, blue, and red.

If you are light-eyed, a pink-based burgundy will make your eyes pop. (Deep Mauve or Rose may be your color.)

If you have dark eyes, use a brown-based shade. The honey in your eyes will be greatly accentuated. (Cherrywood can have hints of brown in the shade)

Blue-based burgundy looks fantastic with all eye colors. Keep the tone rich if you have a neutral, olive, or warm skin tone and muted for lighter or cool skin tones. (Plum is a delicious example of a blue-based burgundy)

Burgundy with a red base will balance out brunettes and they will be able to support the shade. (Think of this as a vampy red)

4. Take them for a test drive. Whether you are at the salon or department store, swipe the color on a white tissue. If you like the shade, try it on. Take a cotton swab and run it across the lipstick. Use the cotton swab to apply it to your lips. Does the color brighten you up or does it make you look sleepy? If the shades lightens you up, that is the one. Now rock it.

5. Lipstick first, then liner. Darker shades can be even messier than red. Apply the lipstick first keeping away from the outer edges. Blot. Now use a matching or only slightly darker liner to outline your lips. Nude liner will work too. Reapply your lipstick remembering to color within the lines.

6. Skip the lip gloss. Dark lips do not need any help in the attention department. Lip gloss can tend to make darker colors bleed. But if you must gloss, only apply a dot of it to the very center of your bottom lip.

7. Rock them. Exude confidence when wearing dark lips. Walk around like you own the place. Having confidence is even sexier than just the lipstick.

Happy Fall!
